| Federico Aguilar Alcuaz |
Simply titled “Peintures” meaning Paintings, the exhibition of the works of Federico Aguilar Alcuaz at the Alliance Francaise de Manille’s Total Gallery revolves around the artist’s links with France. Little known to the many collectors and admirers of his art, Aguilar Alcuaz exhibited not only in Barcelona but also in Paris, and was recognized and awarded several honors by the French Republic. During the nine years he spent in Europe (from 1955-1964), he received numerous Spanish awards and three French ones: the Diploma of Honor at the International Exhibition of Art Libre in 1961, the decoration for Arts, Letters and Sciences, and the Order of French Genius in 1964. Probably one of the most highly acclaimed and be-medalled Filipino artist of his time, he has also been awarded the Philippine Presidential Medal of Merit in 2007, and was proclaimed National Artist in 2009.
Aguilar Alcuaz’s “Peintures” exhibition features works mostly but not exclusively dating from what we might call his “Parisian” period in the early 60s: landscapes, still lifes and abstracts in oil, watercolor and mixed media, as well as some drawings and prints.
The show Peintures by Aguilar Alcuaz opens at the Alliance Française Total Gallery on Tuesday, April 13, 2010, with cocktails at 6:30 pm to 9 pm. It will be on exhibit until Friday, April 30, 2010.
