Your first class at the Alliance Française:

You just arrived at the Gare du Nord of Paris.                
In front of you, your teacher has suddenly transformed into a train-ticket vendor. From the CD-player booms out the rumbling of a train leaving the station.
You are lost.
All around you, everybody is speaking in French.
And now, the train-vendor/teacher walks up to you and asks: “Votre nom, Madame s’il vous plait?” 

          This situation is real.  This is how we teach here at the Alliance Française. From your very first lesson, your teacher will be speaking to you exclusively in French, and, believe it or not, you will find yourself replying to him/her in French as well. Needless to say, French is, naturally, our only medium of instruction. This is because our goal, far from transforming you into specialists of French grammar, is to arm you with the linguistic tools necessary for you to go through everyday life in France.

Our philosophy: 

          After all, language is not grammar, phonology and vocabulary alone, but a set of communicative abilities, which can only be properly learned within communicative situations. Even children, as the latest didactic research has pointed out, do not learn their mother tongue by simple repetition and detailed grammatical exercises—they construct it anew. This is why we at the Alliance Française firmly believe that to study a language, patterns similar to those of a child’s language-acquisition process should be adopted. Emphasis on how to communicate in diverse real-life situations is therefore of monumental importance.
